CAPTAIN'S LOG: SEASON 2 EPISODE 8 - THIS ONE GOES OUT TO ALL THE MOTHERS

by Mark Broady on Sunday, May 9, 2021
This episode of The Captain's Log is dedicated to Mothers. All mothers.

I had to dig around a little, but I finally found this video that was created back in 2015 as a way to honour mothers and to help people see them in a different light.

We often take all the amazing things that mothers do for granted... without realizing the sheer magnitude of their contributions to our lives.

In this video, a fake job posting was created with the title of "Operations Manager", and real job applicants applied for the position. They then show the recorded video interviews from all the applicants, as they describe the various demands that the position requires of the employee.

"This job requires incredible mobility. You're constantly on your feet, constantly bending over, you're constantly exerting yourself, a high level of stamina is needed. There are no breaks available."

"Can you have lunch?"

"Yes, you can have lunch... but only when the associate is done eating their lunch."

"The position requires excellent negotiation and interpersonal skills. We're looking for someone with a degree in medicine, finance, and the culinary arts."

"The associate needs constant attention. Sometimes you'd be expected to stay up with an associate throughout the night."

"Oh, and the salary... there is no salary. Nobody gets paid for this position."

It's absolutely brilliant. I actually got all teary-eyed and emotional at the end because by watching this video, you're forced to recognize these facts as truths. Amazing, jaw-dropping, indisputable truths.

Team Broady is a team of 4 mothers (and one dad). Libby is a proud mother to me and Catherine, as well as our 2 brothers Scott and Sean. She's a grandmother to my 3 kids, Catherine's son, Sean's daughter, and Scott's 2 daughters (7 in total). Sherry is a mother to 2 beautiful young kids, and Desiree is our newest mother just returning back to work this month from maternity leave. Glad to have you back, Des!

This is to all the mothers out there - literally working the toughest job in the world - every single day without fail. My hat is off to you, and I am forever grateful for all the amazing things you do.

Signing off...

You have told me all the things I need to hear

Before I knew I needed to hear them

To be unafraid of all the things I used to fear,

Before I knew I shouldn’t fear them.

Happy Mother's Day!
