the power of connection

Episode 39

I can't make this stuff up...

But these are the little things about my job that I love. This past week, I had the privilege of witnessing the power of connection first hand. Fortunately this all unfolded during a transaction I was involved in with some new clients of mine. I was representing them in the purchase of a new home here in the West Island, and what ended up happening was nothing short of pure magic.

I met Sean & Marie-Eve when they booked a visit to see one of my listings in Beaconsfield which in the end, they didn’t end up offering on. They're a young couple with no kids (yet) and a golden retriever named Clifford. They had plans to get married this year, but just like everyone else with wedding plans - those are now on hold indefinitely because of this crazy pandemic.

They reminded me a lot of my wife and I when we were in those same shoes about 12 or 13 years ago – looking for our first home together.

Not long after we met, another interesting property appeared on the market in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, not far from the McGill University and John Abbott College campuses. This was a character home built in 1932. It has solid wood, everywhere, plaster mouldings, vintage hot-water radiators, creaky floors, and Boston ivy covering parts of the red brick facade. It was love at first sight for Sean & Marie-Eve.

But like most hot properties in this market... there was a time delay for submitting offers and the Seller wouldn't be answering anyone until Monday evening. Our visit was on a Thursday. But immediately following our visit, they knew without a doubt that this was the home they wanted. So we wasted no time preparing an offer, which I submitted with a long covering letter that same evening. The deadline for acceptance on our offer was four full days away - in order to respect the Seller's wishes and to give them the opportunity to hopefully receive other offers.

So we had a looooong weekend to wait and see what would happen.

But rather than just leaving it all to chance - Sean & Marie-Eve decide to take fate into their own hands - by adding their own magic touch to their offer.

They crafted a handwritten personalized letter to the sellers of the home and delivered it to their house on Saturday morning.

When the sellers found the letter - they were positively blown away by the gesture. According to their broker - they began to affectionately refer to Sean and Marie-Eve as "Team Clifford" in reference to their golden retriever whom they described in their letter.

By the time Monday evening rolled around, there were two other offers on the property. We had no way of knowing if either of those offers were far better, or possibly far worse than ours. But luckily the sellers had come to their own conclusions about who they wanted the next owners of their home to be.

They wanted Team Clifford to get it!

So rather than accepting another offer that could have been at a higher price, (who knows)... they sent us a counter-proposal which Sean and Marie-Eve accepted without hesitation. They were ecstatic!

But the story doesn't end there.

A few days later, while we're waiting for the mortgage approval process - Marie-Eve notified me that she and Sean had just received a letter in their mailbox, handwritten from the sellers!

 To quote the sellers directly...

"Your letter touched us, and gave a very human dimension to a faceless process."
They ended the letter, signed by their entire family, with an old Irish Blessing that read…

“May your troubles be less, and your blessings be more,
and may nothing but happiness come through your door”

That right there sums it all up.

This was one of those feel-good stories that I absolutely
HAD to share.

 Signing off...
